It isn’t easy to be Gothic and dark when it’s hot outside, the sun is shining and everything seems wonderful, bright and new.  Our challenge is for you to write a short story with a word limit of 3,000 words.   The winning entries must be Gothic and full of darkness, mazes, places where the sun would be scared to shine.  Take the reader away from the sunlight and plunge them into a darker world, one filled with vampires, werewolves, ghosts or flesh eating zombie creatures from mars.  Whatever your specialist genre, use it and take a Gothic theme to reinvent your characters.

I have left it very open to writers to set their own subject matter.  I would say we are looking for any short story that contains themes common in Gothic and vampire fiction, even a ghost story or scienc fiction would be acceptable.  Themes are important in these genres.  The winning entries will use these theme and build on them to create a new and original piece of work.  If you would like an example of what I mean by this then Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber is exactly the type of reworking that adds something new to the genre.

The best entries will be published in an ebook to be released later this year.  Whilst the over all winning short story will be offered a contract to write a full length vampire novel.  We all know how hard it is to get that first novel published.  We are a new publishing company and actively searching for new novelists and writers.

The closing date for entries is 1st June 2009 and the winners will be announced on the 1st July on this page.  Good luck.  Due to the volume of entries the winners will be announced September 1st.

Anyone who is serious about writing will have felt the sting of rejection.  I know the temptation to just throw your novel in a drawer, forgetting the months you slaved over it, is irresistible.  We at Vamplit Publishing want you to open that drawer, dust off your manuscript and email the first three chapters, a one page synopsis and a scanned copy of the rejection letter to us at Vamplit Publishing.  The winning entries will be published and marketed by Vamplit Publishing with royalties being paid on all sales of the novel.

Competition Guidelines

1.  The novel must be your own original work.

2.  We will not accept any novel that has been published before, or is being read by any other publisher.

3.  The novel must be a vampire or Gothic literature.

4.  Your novel must have been rejected by at least one publisher.

5.  Our decision is final and we will not enter into any discussion on the winner or winners of this competition.

We wish you luck and hope that, with our help, you can turn rejection into success.  Email your entry to vamp@vamplit.com
